• his name is strange and unique! (like him!)
  • his given name, izaya, is written 臨也. the first character, 臨, is typically read as "rin" or "nozomu", and means to look out on. the second character, 也, is a classical way to say "to be". putting the two together, his name means "the one who overlooks," or something similar.
    the reading "izaya" combined with these characters, however, is not typical, and multiple characters have pointed this out before. had the reading not gone through, his parents would have named him rinya.
  • speaking of his name, the actual name "izaya" is derived from the biblical isaiah, who was a prophet.
• izaya can speak russian and english fluently along with japanese!
  • it was actually never shown in the anime or novel when or how he learned english, nor do we ever see him speak it, but he speaks to simon in russian! however, he seems to mostly speak in idioms and expressions, rather than 'natural' russian.
